K'NEX Education and Three Penn State University Campuses TEEM-UP to Help Teachers and Students
On April 2nd and 4th, 2007 professors from three Penn State Campuses worked in concert with the Education Consultant from K'NEX Education to present two, full-day, math and science workshops to teachers in northeastern Pennsylvania.
The program was sponsored by northeastern Pennsylvania's TEEM-Up (Teams of Engineers, Educators, and Mathematicians – Undergraduate Programs) and one of its partners, the Tech Prep program at Luzerne County Community College. One workshop session was held at the Penn State Hazelton Campus in Hazelton, PA and the other was held at the Penn State Worthington Scranton Campus in Dunmore, PA.
The K'NEX Education portion of the program taught teachers strategies and methods to bring math and science lessons to life using K'NEX Education building sets. Using the K'NEX Education Exploring Machines building set, teachers built models such as fixed pulleys, crane systems, scissors and egg beaters as they explored engineering, education, and mathematical concepts using models of real world objects. The conversation was lively and teachers were enthusiastic about the interactive, fun lessons that K'NEX Education building sets offered. The teachers were anxious to bring these sets into their classroom and empower students to develop solutions to real world problems using their creativity and imagination.
At the conclusion of the workshop, each attending teacher was provided with a K'NEX Education Exploring Machines Set to use in their classroom for the next school year. The K'NEX Education Sets were provided by the Tech Prep program from Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke, PA. At the end of the next school year, the sets will be returned to LCCC for use in other classrooms and programs.
This is the third year that K'NEX Education has collaborated with Penn State universities and Luzerne County Community College to provide workshop opportunities for area teachers. The theme last year was solar energy and teachers returned to their classrooms with K'NEX Education Solar Energy Sets. Two years ago the theme was bridges and each attending teacher returned to their classroom with a K'NEX Education Real Bridge Building Set.
