K'NEX Blasts into the New Millennium with Realistic "Missions in Space" LineHatfield, PA - K'NEX once again proves to be a pioneer in the construction toy industry with the introduction of its "Missions in Space" line. Symbols of modern day space exploration, the "Missions In Space" sets let kids create replicas of real space vehicles designed for the exploration of the cosmos.
The excitement surrounding the world's first International Space Station, being built in space over the next four to six years, is the focus of the "Missions in Space" line. The ISS is collectively funded and built by sixteen nations, making it the largest peacetime project ever undertaken! Upon completion, it will measure more than 300 feet and will actually be visible from Earth to the naked eye. The K'NEX model itself will measure over 2 feet and will feature moving parts and realistic sounds making it just as impressive.
The realistic theme of the line enables kids to learn about space exploration and current events in a way that is both fun and educational.
According to Chris Campbell, Vice President of Marketing for K'NEX, kids have a true interest in the universe from a genuine perspective. "Space exploration and discovery is frequently in the news and rapidly becoming a part of our daily lives, " he said. "From the Mars Rover project to the International Space Station, space is current, fun, and fascinating topic. Three of these sets will also include a bonus sheet of NASA Insignia stickers. This collaboration ensures that K'NEX will have one of the most credible space lines available to the consumer."
For 2000, K'NEX introduces four "Missions in Space" theme sets that are immediately recognizable as icons of space exploration:
International Space Station (ISS) - (Suggested Retail Price, $49.99) - Although the estimated completion date of the International Space Station is year 2005, kids can build this giant K'NEX playset today! The ISS K'NEX set builds the colossal International Space Station and features a battery-powered motor that rotates the solar array panels and spins the science power platform. A sound module will provide realistic space sounds. The completed set will rest high upon a display stand with realistic Earth and Space graphics simulating orbit. The ISS building set will also include four miniature astronaut figures, wrap around graphic panels, holographic stickers, a miniature space shuttle, and a satellite.
Cape Canaveral Launch Pad - (Suggested Retail Price, $19.99) - This set builds a replica of the shuttle launch center located in Cape Canaveral, Florida. It includes a launch gantry with moving parts, a wheeled "crawler" to transport the authentically modeled shuttle complete with orbiter, external fuel tank, and solid rocket boosters. The model mimics the design of the real shuttle with graphic panels as well as authentic NASA markings. The shuttle's fuel tank and rocket boosters realistically separate from the shuttle during take off, completing the launch.
Shuttle Orbiter- (Suggested Retail Price, $16.99) - This set creates the "orbiter" section of a space shuttle. Kids can build a large model that features an opening cargo bay door, extendable cargo bay crane, releasable satellite, landing gear, a display stand, and authentic NASA stickers to mimic the markings on the real shuttle.
<b>Moon Rovers- (Suggested Retail Price, $9.99) - With the Moon Rovers set, kids can construct three unique "rover style" vehicles ideal for exploring the moon or any other planet in the solar system. Each model features a radar apparatus that spins as the rover is pushed along.
"The realistic quality of the line adds an educational dimension," added Campbell. "The sets teach children about the history and future of space exploration while fostering the imagination."
As with all K'NEX building sets, "Missions in Space" includes color-coded step-by-step instructions. The "Missions in Space" K'NEX sets will be available nationally in August 2000 and are recommended for children ages 8 and up.
