When did you start building with K'NEX?
I started building with K'NEX's around 5 years old. I built a very simple windmill.
How did you come up with the idea for your winning model?
I started building a train track on towers for my bedroom but ran out of pieces to finish it. I took some of those towers and began to build a cage around them and my sister thought I was building a claw machine. I thought "Why not?" and began working on a claw machine. It took me a year to build and fine tune it to work just right.
What has been your most challenging K'NEX creation?
The joystick for the claw machine was a challenge to get it to work just right. I had to rebuild it many times until I found the right set up.
Do you have a favorite past K'NEXpert? If so, who?
How many siblings do you have? What are their age(s) and gender(s)?
3 - Moriah (12 year old sister) Shauna (11 year old sister) Elijah (9 year old brother)
Do they build with K'NEX too? Do you build models together?
Occasionally they will join me. My brother, Elijah, made it to the Semi-Finalist this year for his age group by building a Cement Mixer Truck.
What are your favorite hobbies (besides building with K'NEX)?
I like to do woodworking and build with robotics.
What is your favorite subject in school?
Math and science
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I would like to get a job that would involve something with computers and designing products.
What is the coolest part about being a 2014 K'NEXpert?
I think it is cool that I got to be a grand prize winner. Each year I entered I kept working harder to get further along in the contest the next year. It is fun to look back at my earlier creations and see how much more advanced they have become over the years.
What advice do you have for other kids who want to be a K'NEXpert?
Keep building and working on your creations. Don't be afraid to change or improve them and try different things out.
