Question and Answer: Winning Model: Texas Grill
This full size grill has flames that come up when you turn the knobs. K'NEX food being cooked on the grill: hot dog, hamburger patty, steak and corn on the cob. A propane tank and 4 grilling utensils (basting brush, tongs, turner and fork) are included. I came up with the idea when I was trying to think of something no one has made out of K'NEX before. I don't know if anyone has entered a BBQ grill model, but it was fun to make. I've had a lot of fun pretending to grill food. It took 2-3 weeks to build and 2,746 pieces.
When did you start building with K'NEX?
I started building with K'NEX when I was five.
What was your most challenging K'NEX creation?
The Texas Twister Rollercoaster I built for the 2008 K'NEXpert contest.
Where did you come up with the idea for your winning model?
I came up with the idea to build the Texas Grill from my dad's barbeque grill.
Do you have a favorite past K'NEXpert, if so who?
Kyler from TX, just joking. Tim from PA is a great builder. I met Tim at the awards ceremony and we both love to build and have been K'NEXperts in the past.
How many siblings do you have? What are their age(s) and gender?
I have one sister. Lanie is seven years old.
Do they build with K'NEX too? Do you build models together?
Yes, she is a 2009 K'NEXpert winner this year. We build together sometimes. I build by myself most of the time.
What are your favorite hobbies (besides building with K'NEX)?
Baseball, video games, building with almost anything, and church.
What is your favorite subject in school?
Math is my favorite subject.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to be a K'NEX designer when I grow up. I loved visiting the K'NEX company in 2008. On our tour of the company I got to meet some of the designers.
What has been the coolest part about being a 2009 K'NEXpert?
Going to New York City has been the coolest part. I had a great time visiting all the sights and meeting other K'NEXpert winners.
