2011 K'NEXperts

State: KS

Age: 10

Question and Answer:

When did you start building with K'NEX?
I started building with K'NEX in June 2007 when my mom bought a 275 tub of K'NEX at a garage sale.

How did you come up with the idea for your winning model?
I started to build Freedom on October 31, 2009. I had just gotten back recently from a family trip to Fort McHenry, MD, and Washington, DC, and Petersburg, VA. I thought about what all those places meant to me and one word stood out which was Freedom. I then looked at some of my mom's collection of horses and then tried to make one. I wanted to say thank you to all of the people who had fought in all of the wars for the USA and allowed us to have our Freedom.

What has been your most challenging K'NEX creation?
The making of the Horse called Freedom, was probably the hardest K'NEX project I have made. I made the head first and then decided to make the body. The head was so heavy that I had to make the body longer to support the weight. Once the framework was done it was strong enough to support the weight of my little brother. Unfortunately, once the body was finished, and I was adding the skin, I found out that the skin would not fit together. I had to take out some of the major supports in the frame which caused it to not support my little brother's weight.

Do you have a favorite past K'NEXpert, if so who?
My favorite would probably be Ian with his Belly of the Beast. I got to meet him at the 2008 K'NEXpert award ceremony and he was really nice.

How many siblings do you have? What are their age(s) and gender?
I have 2 siblings, Kelsey my sister age 9, and Luke my brother age 7.

Do they build with K'NEX too? Do you build models together?
All 3 of us like to build. My sister Kelsey made the Semi-finals last year with her Flutterbye Butterfly. It's hard in that my sister is in my age category when she decides to enter the K'NEXpert contest our friends do not know who to vote for. My brother Luke wants to be a K'NEXpert but unfortunately his builds have never made it to the semi-finals. I love building with both of them (when they want me too).

What are your favorite hobbies (besides building with K'NEX)?
I love going to Church and I love swimming with Wichita YMCA Neptunes.

What is your favorite subject in school?

What do you want to be when you grow up?

What has been the coolest part about being a 2011 K'NEXpert?
The coolest part about being a K'NEXpert to me will happen when my 2008 K'NEXpert Space Shuttle Victory will be placed in Exploration Place the Sedgwick County Science and Discovery Center in Wichita, KS. The K'NEX exhibit runs February 5, through April 24, 2011. (Exploration Place also wants to show my horse named Freedom. I have also been asked to talk about both pieces.) I am so excited to be a K'NEXpert.

What advice do you have for other kids who want to be K'NEXperts?
It's hard when you do not make it into the semifinals, or place in the finals; my best advice is to just keep trying and don't give up.
